Changing the ISO can optimize the color and light of the picture. the lower the ISO the darker the picture the higher the ISO the more light that is let in to make the picture brighter.

adjusting the shutter speed made it so I can capture the child mis air before he hits the wall.

Well changing the aperture makes it so the picture is completely focused on Cristian.If you open the aperture more then it will open you depth of field and not focus on one thing.
